Together with the Tree register NEO has taken the next step in making tree information in the Netherlands better and more complete. Using the latest techniques and all kinds of earth observation data, all tree crowns present in Boombasis have been provided with an accurately determined trunk position. This allows, for instance, an even better mapping of risks to assets, and can be used to update and improve existing tree databases. However, these are just a few of the many applications.
Besides stem positions, we also determined the undergrowth for all tree crowns. The undergrowth says something about the amount of vegetation present in the lowest layer under the tree crown. This can be extremely helpful for determining the boundaries of vegetation objects, but also for distinguishing different types of landscape elements. A wooded bank and a row of trees often look the same from above, however, a row of trees generally has no undergrowth while the wooded bank does.
