How does the Buildings Register work?

Step 1

Input

Based on BAG, BGT, aerial photos, satellite images and own remote sensing/image analysis.

Step 2

Recognition

Detections of building features such as dormers, solar panels, type of roof and material, façade features, etc.

Step 3

Risk analysis

Determine risk indicators (such as flooding, shading, run-off) based on location, environment and building characteristics.

Step 4

Integration

Seamless integration with existing GIS and BI systems makes use in your own work processes easy.

Step 5

Updates

Periodic updates, checking for changes, transparency in quality score.

For whom is the building register valuable?

Frequently asked questions

The Buildings Register is a national data source containing all buildings in the Netherlands, compiled from the official BAG (Basisregistratie Adressen en Gebouwen), the BGT (Basisregistratie Grootschalige Topografie) and NEO's own detections from aerial and satellite imagery.

The dataset has been further enriched with additional features such as addresses, dormers, solar panels, roof types, risk indicators and 3D geometry. This creates a complete, up-to-date and practically applicable overview of the built environment.

The BAG and BGT provide the basis, but contain limitations: not every building has an address, and additional features such as dormers, roof material or solar panels are missing.

NEO combines and enriches these sources with its own object detection, aerial photo analysis and additional records, allowing up to 90% of the buildings has a correct address (versus about 70% in the standard BAG).

Moreover, additional features are added, allowing you to much more context information gets than in basic registrations alone.

NEO updates Buildings Register at least twice a year.

Mutations in BAG and BGT are processed automatically, and new detections (such as solar panels or dormers) are recognised via the latest aerial photographs and satellite images. This keeps the dataset constantly in line with the current situation in the field.

All entries in the Buildings Register are subject to a strict quality control.

Each enrichment has its own level of quality, with transparent metadata on provenance and accuracy.

Combining multiple sources (such as BAG, BGT, AHN and proprietary detections) creates a high reliability rate, suitable for policy decisions, insurance analysis and scientific research.

The Buildings Register is available via:

  • API - For direct linking to your own GIS or data systems;

  • Viewer - an online map environment to view, select and analyse buildings;

  • Dataset downloads - selections by municipality, region or nationwide.

The API allows dynamic queries such as "all buildings with solar panels within 100 metres of a watercourse".

The cost depends on the size of the area, the desired enrichments and the form of delivery (API, viewer or dataset).
