NEO offers unique Earth observation services using AWS

Powered by the AWS Cloud, NEO is the first company in the Netherlands to offer information services to identify changes in our living environment

Amsterdam, May 19, 2022 - NEO, the Dutch specialist in geo-ICT and earth observation, is expanding its partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to provide unique information services that detect changes in geo-objects in our environment. These changes can be anywhere in our environment, such as infrastructure, nature and even solar panels. Using Machine Learning (ML) technology, NEO is this year professionalising its nationwide detection service, called SignalEyes, which allows customers, such as municipalities and insurance companies, to more effectively monitor all assets in the Netherlands, such as buildings, roads and watercourses.

Using Image Processing technology in the cloud, changes in construction and demolition, tree growth, infrastructure, agricultural plots and natural terrain can be observed. Image Processing technology combines remote sensingdata (data collected by aerial and space sensors such as satellite and aerial imagery) with other geographical data in SignalEyes. NEO provides its customers with customised change signals, for example for Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland, an agency of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate and the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality.

In late 2020, NEO decided to migrate 100 TB of data to AWS in order to stop having to maintain their own infrastructure and focus on their core business, having better data protection and being able to leverage stronger reliability and scalability of their resources. NEO built SignalEyes on a serverless infrastructure with AWS Lambda. With the cloud, SignalEyes can now process 100 TB of stereo images, consume CPU and GPU machines with high computing power and provide a 3D geographic model of the country.

Team NEO & AWS

"Working with AWS gives us the ability to detect relevant changes in the living environment in real-time. This is important to provide information on impactful social situations such as crop classification, potential options for solar panels in the city and flood maps," said Rob Beck, CEO of NEO. "We completed a full migration in a few weeks and we can now help our clients better assess changes in environmental assets to make more informed decisions, save costs and generate less waste in sectors such as the public sector, agriculture and utilities."

SignalEyes will be rolled out further this year, offering streamlined online subscriptions, payments and data access.

About NEO

NEO provides unique information services from changes in our living environment. Satellites, aircraft and drones regularly monitor our living environment. SignalEyes is our way of using these observations and providing the analytics to update information. Examples include crop management and control, tax register updates, pipeline monitoring, tree maintenance, location and size of solar panels, etc. We monitor all buildings, roads, watercourses, trees and fields. NEO is the first company on earth with the capabilities to monitor an entire country.
