Hi, I'm Reggie. I am currently doing the Geographical Information minor in the third year of my Bachelor's degree in Earth, Economics and Sustainability at the Free University of Amsterdam. After a crash course in GIS, I was given the opportunity to do an eight-week internship at NEO. I was eager to do an internship at NEO because of the diversity of projects related to Earth observations and geodata. I am now learning at NEO that automating and setting up a recognition system, which, for example, observes landscape changes, can be enormously valuable for companies and governments.
During my internship, I am immersing myself in a project NEO has been working on for the past few years. This involved developing a system that uses satellite monitoring and deep learning to classify invasive aquatic plants in watercourses. The aerial classification needs better validation and this can be done with crowdsourced field observations, a kind of 'eyes on the ground'.
My task is to make an optimal spatial representation of the combination of the classification system with those field observations. In addition, I make my own field observations to investigate the accuracy of NEO's supervised classification system. I do this with enormous enthusiasm, as it is finally possible again to work outdoors and get a taste of a real working atmosphere.
