Renewable energy has been on the rise in recent years. Last March 26, the record for green power generation was broken. For a short time then, 77 per cent of all power was generated sustainably. Recently, so many windmills have been installed that twice as much energy can be generated with them compared to last year. What is interesting, of course, is where these wind turbines are placed and to map this automatically. That is why NEO has recently developed a SignalGenerator for wind turbines, both wind turbines under construction and operational wind turbines. The SignalGenerator uses a Deep Learning model that can recognise objects based on shape, texture and colour, among other things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several applications can be imagined for this SignalGenerator. For instance, it is of course interesting for the government with a view to climate targets to be able to monitor how many wind turbines are operational or under construction. After all, by 2030 an average of 70 per cent of electricity production will have to come from renewable sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other sectors can also benefit from NEO's new SignalGenerator for wind turbines. For example, the association Sovon Vogelonderzoek (Sovon), commissioned by the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, recently studied where bird species vulnerable to wind farms occur, resulting in a sensitivity map for birds in the Netherlands Background document wind energy sensitivity map birds | Sovon.co.uk<\/a>. By combining this map with the locations of already existing wind turbines detected by NEO, risk analyses can be made for different bird populations, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
