Traditional methods are labor-intensive, but Smart Tracing reduces costs by prioritizing areas likely to contain transmission towers, minimizing the imagery needed. The algorithm uses probability maps and convolutional neural networks to identify towers and trace lines. Applied in Bangladesh, the Dominican Republic, and Liberia under a World Bank (ESMAP) project, it reduced imagery needs by 90% while mapping over 32,000 towers and 9,900 km of lines, aiding grid operations and climate resilience planning.​
