Pondweed in the Randmeren on Satellite Images!

Left: Sentinel-2 admission: 17-07-2019 and right Sentinel-2 admission: 23-03-2020

Pondweed is an enthusiastic grower in the Randmeren. Good for water quality, but troublesome for water recreation. The illustration clearly shows where and how pondweed is developing, in this case in Wolderwijd. The images were captured by the Sentinel-2 satellites.

The warm spring of 2020 is once again creating ideal growing conditions for aquatic plants. For water sports enthusiasts, this is a lot less pleasant: the strands of vegetation can block the propeller. It also creates a nuisance for swimmers. The fact that the pondweed is mowed or otherwise removed in places is easy to see in the illustration in the angular patterns.
NEO now has a number of services through which we monitor various aquatic plants. We are now investigating whether we can also do something about pondweed. Want to know more? Get in touch with Lotte ten Harmsen van der Beek
